I have become very interested in the Civil War ever since I found the Confederate records of some of my ancestors & have been reading quite a bit about it. I was a little bit disappointed in this in that a lot of it was almost a list: we marched here, this is who was with us, these were killed, these wounded, etc. But, later on he goes into more detail about what was going on & the incredibly, horrendous conditions those poor guys lived & somehow fought in. I don't know how they carried on & you have to admire them for it, regardless of whose side you are on. The whole thing was an appalling situation. I wish I could have met David Johnston & I am glad he wrote this book.Product details

The Story of a Confederate Boy in the Civil War David Emmons Johnston 9781142210731 Books Reviews
A good book to read if you want to understand how a typical Rebel was thinking during the war.
Enjoyed first-hand details of the Civil War. Well worth the read and his insightful descriptions of their heroic ordeals.
Johnston was a very lucky man to live through most of the major battles fought in the east. We are also lucky that he lived to write this book giving us an on the spot look at the life of an confederate soldier.
Best story of Marse Robert and all other civil war stories. Full of facts and accurate depictions. A wonderful read for those who seek the truth about the war between the state's.
Great detail given of battles , every day life of the soldiers, very detailed listing by name of the casualties, a genealogist's treasure trove of ancestors who fought in the War. So much to absorb ! Fascinating !
For a youngster, his knowledge of the names and dates is exceptional. A very well written book and an asset to all that are interested in a detailed report of the Civil War.
Sam was quite a verbose li'l guy! A good read with lots of insight into his life as he saw it. He is quick to point out that he's not an historian. He simple presents things as he remembers them. Of course, writing about something 50 years after it happened isn't going to be the most accurate, but he's honest about that. All in all, I'm glad I picked it up.
